Entrepreneur Series #11: 4 Coaching Stages Every Leader Should Master
This is part 11 of a series of 18 articles I wrote for Entrepreneur.com.
Not everyone needs the same kind of coaching. That sounds obvious, but watch most managers and you’ll see them give the same feedback the same way to everyone on their team.
I think about coaching in four stages. Beginners need clear instruction — tell them what to do and why. Novices need specific critique — they know the basics, now help them refine. Intermediates need questions, not answers — they’re ready to develop their own judgment. Masters need a peer — they can self-evaluate and chart their own course.
The ultimate goal? Help someone progress through all four stages until they can coach others. That’s when you know you’ve actually developed a leader, not just a high performer.
